Save the Environment Scholarship

The Campus Environment Committee is offering $150 scholarship to students in the Spring 2009. Eligible students must:

• Be a Full or Part Time Eastern Campus student
• Have a minimum GPA of 3.2
• Be willing to participate on the Eastern Campus Environment Committee

To apply, students must:

• Fill out an application (http://www3.sunysuffolk.edu/Scholarships/search.asp#New)
• Write an essay describing the importance of "going green" (two pages, double-spaced)

Green bags are now 2 for $5, thanks to a generous donation by Ted Koukounas! They're reusable, recyclable and they make great gifts! Please contact Phoebe Smith in S219 if you're interested in getting your hands on some green bags.

If you haven't already, please provide input regarding the College's Strategic Plan by logging into My SCCC and clicking on the Human Resources tab and refer to Academics. We can show our support for the College's plans to invest $25, 000 toward the development of a Sustainability Task Force.

10 Tips for Going Green!

Buy a green bag! And always choose re-usable tote bags instead of paper or plastic at the store.

Always recycle paper, plastic, aluminum, cell phones and ink cartridges at home and at work!

Purchase recycled materials whenever possible. Keep in mind, recycling still requires energy, so re-using is even better!

Visit your local farmer’s market and buy locally grown produce.

Avoid using toxic chemicals such as pesticides and household cleaning products. You can use ammonia, vinegar and other non-toxic products to clean your whole house!

Dispose of hazardous materials properly. This list includes batteries, smoke detectors, compact fluorescent bulbs and electronics.

Carpool, take mass transit, bike or walk whenever possible.

Reduce waste. Buy in bulk! Avoid buying products with lots of packaging. Consider alternatives to disposable products, such as cloth napkins and re-usable cups or mugs.

Minimize energy & water consumption. Buy Energy Star appliances; replace light bulbs with fluorescent bulbs; turn off electronics & faucets when not in use; hang your clothes out to dry!

Always consider the environmental impact of your actions! Ask yourself: Do I really need it? Can I buy a used version? Can I re-use it?

Green Awards

The Committee would like to recognize the individual/group efforts to make Suffolk more environmentally-responsible. Bravo to the following Green Award recipients:

Faye Laurenso - for significantly reducing paper consumption by the Graphic Arts Dept.
Mary Ryder - for getting rid of styrofoam and stocking organic products in the cafeteria
Math & Science support staff - for reducing paper waste by the Department
